Music Academy Teacher (Piano)

Reporting to: Head of Performing and Creative Arts Faculty / Head of Music


The primary requirement will be to teach piano to pupils of all abilities from ages 4 to 18, and be able to motivate young people in their music-making. The successful candidate will be expected to provide lessons on a one-to-one basis, in addition to offering, supporting and promoting co-curricular activities and performances within the school.

Times of Duty:

Three days per week (Monday to Friday), in agreement with the Head of Faculty, when the school is in session and the Music Academy is operational, as per the school academic calendar (114 days in total, September to June).

Music Academy Teachers are:

  • Scheduled for up to 6 hours and 30 minutes of teaching per day, between the hours of 08:00 – 18:00.
  • Required on campus ready for work 15 minutes before the first scheduled lesson.
  • Required to remain on campus for 15 minutes after the end of the timetabled school day for students, or until they have no further meetings, duties or commitments on campus.

Additional working days may be required for performances or events, in agreement with the Head of Faculty.



  • Teach individual piano lessons to pupils aged 4-18.
  • Offer, support and promote co-curricular activities and performance opportunities within the school (Rock and Pop, Jazz, Chamber, Orchestral).
  • Plan and prepare lessons in relation to individual pupils’ needs and examination syllabuses.
  • Teach music theory, aural skills and practical techniques to pupils.
  • Prepare pupils for music examinations and performances.
  • Motivate pupils and encourage progress.
  • Liaise with academic staff and parents as required.
  • Assess pupils’ abilities and provide feedback and practice targets.
  • Ensure that the relevant school equipment is maintained in good working condition for pupils’ use.


The successful candidate should:

  • Have good command of both written and spoken English.
  • Have previous experience as an instrumental teacher and/or professional musician.
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in music and a postgraduate qualification in education.
  • Have a high level of expertise in piano performance (a minimum of ABRSM Grade 8 or equivalent).
  • Be able to teach another instrument to a suitable level (desirable, but not essential).
  • Have up-to-date knowledge of examination requirements (ABRSM/Trinity/RSL).
  • Have a proven track record of excellent pedagogical practice.
  • Be able to engage, motivate and support children, staff and parents.
  • Be a reflective practitioner with the ability to think creatively and innovate.
  • Be a positive and enthusiastic member of the staff room.
  • Be willing to be fully involved in the co-curricular life of a Boarding School.
